Many people are affected by allergies and asthma. We often think of triggers like pets or pollen, but have you considered how you are affected by your home’s humidity level? Too much humidity can contribute to allergies and asthma in a variety of ways.
Both of these organisms are fungi. They thrive in moist environments and can seriously negatively impact your air quality. Areas with poor air circulation and a water source are particularly ideal for these fungi. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements are fungus friendly locations. Both of these fungi are common triggers of allergies and asthma.
Pests
If fungi love humidity, it shouldn’t be a surprise that other unwanted critters like it as well. Dust mites and roaches prefer being in a humid environment. They do not drink using their mouths and depend totally on the humidity in the air for water. The same areas of your home that are prone to fungus are also prone to pests. Roach and dust mite allergies are very common.
Allergies and Asthma
Symptoms of indoor allergies include nasal congestion, runny nose, eye-watering, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, and post-nasal drip. Allergies can also occur to the skin, causing eczema, rashes, and itching. Wheezing and difficulty breathing are symptoms of asthma.
Keep Areas Dry
Regular cleaning, especially drying, of surfaces in your home, can help to decrease the growth of mold and mildew in your home. Watch out for leaks that may be contributing to persistent moisture. Do not leave wet clothing out to decrease the likelihood of mold growth.
Houseplants
Some indoor plants have been shown to improve air quality by removing unhealthy chemicals from the air.
Cleaning Mold and Mildew
If you are aware of mold and mildew in your home, you should use the correct cleaning products to remedy the problem. Bleach, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide are useful products for removing small amounts of mold and mildew.
Ultraviolet Lights
Mold and mildew are no match for UV lighting. This method can be very effective for bad mold problems. UV lights combined with air purification systems installed by a professional HVAC service will improve the air quality in your home in many ways.
Dehumidifiers
With a whole home dehumidifier, you can choose the right humidity level for your home, and it will turn on and off as needed. Having your home humidity levels maintained at all times offers you relief from allergens caused by too much humidity.
